OUR Philosophy

Chess is one of those rare games that stays with you for life. Once you fall in love with it, it never really leaves. That's the experience we want every student to have. At One Move Ahead, we teach chess in a way that builds genuine passion for the game โ€” not just moves and rules, but a real love for thinking, competing, and growing. We keep things fun, personal, and encouraging, because a child who enjoys learning will always outperform a child who doesn't. Our goal isn't just to make better chess players. It's to build sharper, more confident thinkers โ€” kids who know how to face a hard problem or challenge and not give up. We're inspired by players such as Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Gukesh Dommaraju, and Ding Liren โ€” and we believe that everyone (especially children) carries that same incredible potential, just waiting to be unlocked.

Every great player started as a beginner. We're here to make sure that beginning counts.

What you will gain

Chess isn't just a game โ€” it's a full brain workout, simultaneously activating both hemispheres and demanding logic, memory, and spatial awareness all at once. The benefits to both adults and children are clear. Research shows that students who play chess improve in spatial reasoning, long-term planning, decision-making, memory, and critical thinking โ€” and it goes beyond the board.

For children, the evidence is clear. A meta-analysis of 24 studies found that chess instruction produces meaningful gains in both math and reading skills in young students. Brain scans show that during a game of chess, a child's brain simultaneously activates areas responsible for reasoning, planning, visual recognition, spatial memory, and emotional processing โ€” all at once. When compared to children playing soccer or basketball after school, children who played chess were significantly more likely to improve their cognitive abilities, problem-solving capacity, and coping skills. A study in New Jersey found that children who played chess for just one year became noticeably more confident โ€” confidence that carried over into school, friendships, and everyday life. Chess has even shown remarkable results for children with ADHD โ€” the structured, strategic nature of the game builds emotional self-regulation, teaching children to practice patience, think before acting, and stay composed under pressure. Chess doesn't just teach strategy. It rewires how children think, feel, and carry themselves.

And the benefits don't stop at childhood. For adults, chess is one of the most effective stress-relief tools available โ€” research shows it lowers cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, while the deep focus required acts as a form of meditation, shifting attention away from daily pressures. Chess also promotes neuroplasticity โ€” the brain's ability to form new connections โ€” which is crucial for maintaining long-term cognitive health. It builds emotional resilience too, training adults to stay composed under pressure and adapt to setbacks โ€” skills that carry directly into work and everyday life. And for older adults, the evidence is striking: a 2023 study in JAMA Network Open followed over 10,000 adults for a decade and found that regularly playing chess was linked to a 9% lower risk of developing dementia. Remarkably, chess outperformed activities commonly believed to be brain-healthy โ€” including painting, reading, and craftwork. Chess is one of the few activities that keeps the mind sharp at every stage of life.

At One Move Ahead, we take this seriously. Our lessons are designed to develop real thinking skills โ€” not just openings and tactics, but the kind of deep, patient reasoning that carries into classrooms, careers, and life. Every student who walks through our program leaves not just a better chess player, but a sharper thinker.

Curriculum Overview

Every lesson at One Move Ahead follows a clear, structured format. Each 2-hour session is divided into four focused blocks: the first 30 minutes are dedicated to reviewing recent games โ€” identifying what went well, what didn't, and setting a clear direction for growth. The next 30 minutes introduce new concepts in a guided, easy-to-follow way. Students then spend 30 minutes actively applying what they've learned through targeted exercises. The final 30 minutes are reserved for playing against others โ€” because there's no better teacher than a real game.

Progress is tracked continuously, and every student receives a weekly personalized update so they (and their parents if the student is a child) always know exactly where they stand and what they're working toward. Homework is assigned after every class to reinforce learning between sessions.

The course will take place over 6 weeks with 2 sessions per week, each session being two hours. At the end, each student will be awarded a certificate for completing the course.

The curriculum itself covers six main stages:

Chess Fundamentals โ€” Piece movement, check and checkmate, castling, notation, and board awareness. Every strong player starts here.

Opening Principles โ€” Controlling the center, developing pieces, king safety, and avoiding the mistakes that hold most beginners back.

Tactical Training โ€” Forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and pattern recognition through hands-on exercises. This is where games are won and lost.

Strategy & Planning โ€” Evaluating positions, building long-term plans, improving pieces, and understanding pawn structures.

Endgame Skills โ€” King and pawn endings, essential checkmates, and converting winning positions with confidence.

Game Analysis & Growth โ€” Reviewing games, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and setting goals. Because improvement never stops.

FAQ

What ages and skill levels do you teach?

We welcome all ages and all beginners. Kids, teens, adults โ€” if you're new to the game or starting fresh, there's a spot for you. Students are grouped by age, so the experience always feels personal and appropriate.

Not at all โ€” One Move Ahead is designed for beginners and those new to the game. All you need is a curiosity for chess and a willingness to learn.

You absolutely can โ€” and many people try. But without structured guidance, most self-taught players develop bad habits that are hard to fix later, miss critical concepts, and plateau early. A coach doesn't just teach you moves โ€” they show you how to think, catch your mistakes before they become habits, and push you in ways a YouTube video never can. On top of that, learning alongside other students keeps things engaging, competitive, and motivating in a way that solo learning simply can't replicate. Learning on your own is possible. Learning with One Move Ahead is faster, more effective, and a lot more fun.

Most chess tutoring services are expensive, impersonal, and entirely online. One Move Ahead is different. Our lessons are offered in person โ€” a rarity in today's world of screen-based learning โ€” creating a real, engaging environment where students actually connect with their coach and each other. We charge $16 per lesson, a fraction of the $30โ€“$150 you'd find elsewhere, because we believe quality chess coaching should be accessible to everyone. But what really sets us apart is simple โ€” we genuinely love this game. That passion shows up in every lesson, every game review, and every student we coach.

We offer in-person group sessions only โ€” no online lessons, no private one-on-ones. Both are deliberate choices. In-person learning is more engaging, more interactive, and builds a real sense of community that a screen can't replicate. And the group environment keeps things competitive and fun in a way solo lessons can't match. That said, no student ever gets left behind โ€” we offer 24/7 support for chess questions outside of class, and highly motivated students can arrange personal sessions for extra guidance.

Life happens โ€” we get it. If you need to cancel or reschedule, just let us know at least 24 hours in advance and we'll find a time that works for you at no extra charge. Missed lessons without notice are charged in full. We make rescheduling easy because every lesson counts โ€” each session covers new material and we don't want any student falling behind.

By the end of the program, every student will be fully prepared for over the board play โ€” comfortable with the rules, confident in their thinking, and ready to compete at a casual and club level. While we don't promise overnight grandmasters, we do promise that every student will leave with a real foundation, a love for the game, and the tools to keep improving long after the program ends.

Chess offers benefits for virtually every child, regardless of their interests or learning style. If your child enjoys puzzles, strategy games, or problem-solving, they'll likely love chess. But even children who seem restless or struggle with focus often thrive โ€” the game is engaging and rewarding in a way that surprises most people. And after all, there's a reason chess is one of the most played games in human history โ€” roughly 600 million adults play chess regularly, and about 83% of households own a chessboard. The best way to find out? Try it. Your first lesson is free.

Almost certainly. Research consistently shows that chess and academic performance go hand in hand. Regular chess practice has been linked to improvements in mathematical reasoning, reading comprehension, memory, concentration, and critical thinking โ€” skills that directly translate into the classroom. Beyond academics, chess also builds patience, self-discipline, and the ability to think ahead โ€” habits that benefit your child far beyond any single subject.

At our in-person lessons, everything you need โ€” chess boards and all materials โ€” is provided. At home, all you need is a device with access to Chess.com.
